What is biodiesel
Biodiesel is the name of a clean burning alternative fuel, produced from domestic, renewable resources. Biodiesel contains no petroleum, but it can be blended at any level with petroleum diesel to create a biodiesel blend. It can be used in compression-ignition (diesel) engines with little or no modifications. Biodiesel is simple to use, biodegradable, non-toxic, and essentially free of sulphur and aromatics. Ecocabs use a blend of renewable biodiesel and petroleum diesel for optimum efficiency.
Why do we use biodiesel?
Biodiesel is better for the environment because it is made from renewable resources and has lower emissions compared to petroleum diesel. It is less toxic than table salt and biodegrades as fast as sugar. Since it is made in the North East from renewable resources from the UK, its use decreases our dependence on foreign oil and contributes to our own economy.
Where does our biodiesel come from?
Ecocabs sources its biodiesel from a local company. They manufacture the fuel by recycling restaurant, chip shop and take-away waste vegetable oil into biodiesel fuel.
What other environmental initiatives do Ecocabs partake in?
We are currently in the process of creating a scheme to off set our taxi fleets carbon emissions. Rather than use an external company that provides this service for businesses by planting trees around the world, Ecocabs think it is more important to keep this scheme local. Therefore, we have decided to undertake the project ourselves, we have had discussions with numerous local landowners, and are devising a plan to carefully plant native hardwood trees and create woodlands that can be appreciated in the future. We will be documenting this project on the website in the near future.
We also make sure all our office stationary and consumables are sourced from ethical sources, such as the paper used in our promotional material and correspondence, which is all 100% recycled and chemical free.
What is climate change?
The Government's Chief Scientific Advisor has described climate change as a bigger threat than terrorism. It is the biggest threat to the natural world and will have huge implications for the way we live our lives.
Climate change or global warming is caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide (C02) and other polluting gases in our atmosphere. Climate change is happening at a much quicker rate due to the pollutants released from human activities. Click here to read more.
