Full day Hadrians wall guided tour

Full day Hadrians wall guided tour
A full day on the Hadrians Wall allows you a more leisurely opportunity to experience the wall as seen through Roman eyes.
In the first part of the day, EcoTours will convey you by taxi to Housesteads; a fascinating site.
Housteads fort –Roman Vercovicium – has it all; the magnificent ruins, a museum and amazing views. Housesteads itself was an ‘afterthought’ to the Wall, forming part of the second phase. It is the most complete Roman fort in Britain and is on a most commanding position up on the hillside.
In the second part of the day, we will travel by EcoTours taxi to Vindolanda. Vindolanda and the Roman Museum bring history alive. The soil conditions have meant that many fascinating details of daily life have been preserved and painstakingly unearthed.
We can see leather shoes, ornaments and textiles. Most fascinating are the wooden writing tablets whose stories bring this Roman history to life. Gossip, letters asking for clothes, notes about food stores and even a wonderful invitation to a birthday party by the wife of Vindolanda’s commander are all on view in the museum. You can visit the reconstructed cottages and listen to the re-enactments of the lifestyles so long ago.
Also at Vindolanda is a careful recreation of a section of the Wall itself. Carefully based on archaeological evidence there is a huge stone wall nearly 23 feet high, complete with battlements, turret and ditch. Also reproduced is a stretch of Turf Wall showing what the Cumbrian part of the wall would have been like before it was rebuilt in stone.
With this day’s outing, we can either do a round trip on foot, savouring the atmosphere and experiencing the solitude of the Wall, or we can go by taxi from Housesteads to Vindolanda and spend more time exploring each of the forts and museums.
