If you’ve only a short period of time then our half day package will ensure you get to experience the archetypal Hadrian’s Wall.
We will pick you up from Hexham train station, your accommodation or any point of your choosing, and take you by taxi to Hadrian’s Wall to the amazing Housesteads site.
Housteads –Roman Vercovicium – is in a most spectacular area and next to the best part of the wall along all of its 80 roman mile length. This fort has remarkable preserved features and the nearby museum helps bring its history to life. Ancient treasures, painstakingly uncovered from the site, are on display.
Housesteads Roman Fort itself is stunning. We can see the fort headquarters and the commanding officers house just to its south. The hospital remains – complete with operating theatre –can be seen as can the all-important granaries. Even the communal latrines, where 12 legionaries could sit and rinse their cleaning sponges in the water channels are amazingly preserved!
Our half-day tour of the Roman Wall will give us ample opportunity to explore this awesome site and even take a short walk along the most incredible section of the wall west towards Steel Rigg. A taxi to Housesteads is by far the most convenient way to travel.
